Two fire engines and around ten firefighters were called to a fire in a two storey house converted into two flats on Rutland Road in Forest Gate, in the early hours of this morning.

Around one quarter of the ground floor flat was damaged by fire. Eight people left the affected flat before the Brigade arrived, four of whom were taken to hospital as a precaution. A further person was led to safety by firefighters from the second floor flat and was treated by London Ambulance Service crews.

The Brigade was called at 0212 and the fire was under control by 0249. Crews from East Ham and Stratford fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
